Why Focus on ASEAN?

ASEAN's strategic importance cannot be overstated. As a collective, it is a major gateway to the global economy and plays a significant role in global geopolitics. Understanding the nuances of each ASEAN economy is essential for anyone looking to engage with this dynamic region.

As ASEAN continues to evolve as a global epicentre of economic, social, and political importance, we feel now is an opportune time to use our front-row seat to offer a unique perspective on what matters to the people of Southeast Asia.

Introducing the HorizonASEAN Report

In an era defined by rapid change and complex challenges, Blackbox Research is proud to launch our latest contribution to understanding Southeast Asia: the HorizonASEAN report. This new insights report seeks to measure what matters most to Southeast Asians and is poised to become an important resource for stakeholders looking to navigate the shifting landscapes of the ASEAN economies.

HorizonASEAN zeroes in on the personal priorities of Southeast Asians and their perceptions of national performance in five essential areas: AI, Sustainability, Healthcare, Economy, and Defence & Security. This focused approach allows HorizonASEAN to provide detailed decision intelligence and longitudinal analysis, making it a centrepiece of our wider, ongoing ASEANScan studies.

The Five Dimensions of HorizonASEAN

The choice of AI, Sustainability, Healthcare, Economy, and Defence & Security as focal points is very deliberate. These dimensions are deemed by Asian communities as crucial to their future and HorizonASEAN's methodology is designed to provide deep insights into these areas, reflecting the current and future states that are shaping the region’s trajectory.

Insights for Action

The HorizonASEAN report not only maps out the priorities of Southeast Asians but also compares these against the perceived performance of their nations. This comparative analysis helps stakeholders understand where each country stands in terms of public expectation and regional benchmarks. It serves as a vital tool for policymakers, business leaders, and academics to craft informed strategies and initiatives.

Leveraging HorizonASEAN

Readers of the HorizonASEAN report can expect to gain valuable insights that can directly impact decision-making and strategy formulation. By understanding the priorities and perceptions of ASEAN citizens, stakeholders can better align their actions with the needs and expectations of the region. Whether it's pivoting towards sustainable practices, enhancing healthcare accessibility, or leveraging technological advances, the insights provided by HorizonASEAN equip decision-makers with the knowledge to make impactful changes.

Key Findings from the Inaugural Report (April 2024)

The first edition of the HorizonASEAN report illuminates several critical insights:

  • National Security and Healthcare Take Precedence: Reflecting longstanding geopolitical tensions and ageing demographics, these traditional areas emerge as top priorities for the region.

  • Sustainability and Economy Are Key Concerns: These issues rank closely behind, indicating a significant breakthrough in environmental awareness alongside economic considerations.

  • AI Seen as Lower Priority: Despite the global tech revolution, AI currently stands as the least prioritised among the five dimensions.

  • Perceived Underperformance Across All Dimensions: Citizens generally view their governments as underperforming in meeting their expectations, especially in the economy.

  • Country-Specific Sentiments Vary: Singapore shows the best alignment between personal priorities and perceived national performance, particularly in AI and National Security.

  • Wide Gaps in the Philippines: The largest disparities between personal importance and national performance are seen in Filipino responses, particularly in healthcare.

Real-Time Sentiment Today and a Window to Tomorrow

As Southeast Asia continues to evolve, the need for comprehensive, nuanced insights becomes more critical. HorizonASEAN offers just that—a detailed, data-driven snapshot of the region’s present conditions and its future possibilities. For anyone committed to understanding or engaging with Southeast Asia, HorizonASEAN is an indispensable resource, providing clarity and foresight in an increasingly complex world.
