The Great Internship Dilemma: Invaluable Experiences or Interminable Wastes of Time?
In today’s competitive job market, internships have evolved from mere stepping stones to crucial battlegrounds where students eye for an edge. This rising trend of "internship stacking"—where students accumulate multiple internships to enhance their resumes—has sparked a debate on whether more is truly better or if it merely leads to burnout. While some students juggle up to ten internships at a time, others question whether such a high quantity genuinely enhances career readiness or just adds to stress.
At the time of writing, there are four of us interning at Blackbox Research in different departments between June and August 2024, so we thought it would be a good idea to have a conversation about this internship debate. Our discussion explores the motivations behind pursuing internships, the challenge of balancing internships with academic commitments, the value of hands-on experiences, and the impact of internships on career development. We also delve into the quality versus quantity debate, examining the benefits and potential downsides of internship stacking to provide a comprehensive view of navigating the internship landscape and finding the right balance.
Motivations for Pursuing Internships
We began by exploring why students are motivated to pursue multiple internships. The drive to gain practical experience and enhance job prospects often fuels this trend.
Wayne: “Personally, my motivations are all about bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world practice. I completed two internships, each offering a unique perspective and set of insights into my field. One was focused on the technical aspects of my industry, while the other gave me a chance to engage in strategic planning and client interactions. These experiences helped me understand how the concepts I learned in class are applied in different contexts.”
Cliffton: “I can relate to that. My motivation came from my desire to see how the concepts I studied actually play out in real-world scenarios. I took on two internships, each in different areas of my field, to gain a broader understanding. One involved working on a high-profile project where I could apply theoretical concepts, and the other gave me hands-on experience with day-to-day operations. Both experiences were instrumental in shaping my career perspective and understanding of industry practices.”
Grace: “It was driven by a mix of practical skill development and the need to build a solid professional network. I completed two internships—one with a tech startup and another with a well-established company. Each provided valuable hands-on experience: the startup offered a dynamic environment where I could wear multiple hats, while the established company gave me exposure to structured processes and industry standards. Networking with professionals from both experiences significantly expanded my connections and provided mentorship opportunities.”
Jayati: “It’s fascinating to hear everyone’s different motivations. My goal was to explore various industries and roles to refine my career goals. By undertaking two internships in different sectors—one in sales and another in market research—I was able to evaluate different career paths and understand what aligns best with my interests and skills. Each internship provided distinct experiences that helped me clarify my career direction and set more informed goals.”

We then tackled the challenge of balancing internships with academic responsibilities. The pressure to gain extensive experience has led some to juggle multiple roles, sometimes at the expense of their well-being.
Cliffton: “I avoid taking on internships during the semester as it can be overwhelming. I prefer to focus on my studies during that time to maintain a good academic record. Instead, I take advantage of breaks and summer periods to pursue internships. This way, I can dedicate my full attention to each without compromising my academic performance.”
Grace: “I agree, Cliffton. Managing both can be a real challenge, and I’ve felt the pressure of juggling internships and academic responsibilities. Effective time management and knowing when to take breaks have been crucial. I’ve had to set up a detailed schedule to balance classes, study time, and internship work, and make a point of setting aside time for relaxation and personal activities.”
Jayati: “I haven’t had to juggle multiple internships at once, but focusing on one significant commitment at a time seems to work best for me. During my internships, I set clear goals and managed my time meticulously. Good time management and clear goal setting have been essential.”
Wayne: “Balancing internships with academic commitments can be challenging. I try to avoid juggling multiple internships during my academic semesters. Managing my studies alone can be quite demanding, especially since social sciences involve a lot of project work.”
Valuable Hands-On Experiences
Next, we discussed the specific hands-on experiences that each of us found most valuable during our internships. This segment underscored the importance of engaging in meaningful, impactful work.
Wayne: “At Blackbox Research, I was involved in a wide range of tasks, from content creation to event planning. One of the highlights was generating ideas for articles and social media content, which allowed me to flex my creative muscles. I also had the opportunity to plan and execute events and conduct market research and competitor analysis. Each of these tasks provided a different perspective and set of skills that were incredibly valuable.”
Cliffton: “Personally, one project that really stands out was developing a new software feature. It was a complex task that required a lot of problem-solving and adaptation to real-world demands. I had to work closely with a team, troubleshoot issues, and iterate on the design based on user feedback. It was challenging, but the hands-on experience taught me a lot about how to approach real-world problems and work effectively in a team.”
Grace: “Those sound like valuable experiences. Personally, working on a web scraping algorithm at the Broad Museum LA was particularly fulfilling. Designing and implementing the algorithm improved data handling efficiency, which contributed significantly to the museum’s research capabilities. It gave me a sense of accomplishment and a deeper understanding of how technical skills are applied in a practical setting.”
Jayati: “At Blackbox, I found the competitor analysis project especially valuable. Gathering and analysing data allowed me to apply my research and communication skills, and seeing how my insights influenced client strategies was rewarding. It reinforced the importance of thorough research and effective communication in shaping business strategies.”

The debate over whether it’s better to have multiple internships or focus on a few high-quality ones was a significant part of our discussion. We examined the potential downsides of internship stacking and the importance of meaningful experiences.
Jayati: “Focusing on quality is really important. I believe that a few well-chosen internships with significant learning experiences will have a more positive impact than many internships that are less relevant. It’s about ensuring that each internship adds value and helps you develop skills and knowledge that will be useful in your career.”
Grace: “I agree with you, Jayati. Having multiple internships can be valuable, but only if each one offers unique and significant experiences. It’s crucial to ensure that every internship contributes meaningfully to your professional development. Quality should always be prioritized over quantity, as meaningful experiences provide more substantial benefits in the long run.”
Wayne: “Personally, I think having a variety of internships can be beneficial, but focusing on the sheer number might be counterproductive and could take a toll on your mental health. The depth of experience is more important than the sheer number of positions held.”
Cliffton: “Well, I think having multiple internships can be beneficial, but it really depends on the quality of each experience. If each internship provides substantial learning opportunities and contributes to your overall growth, then it’s worthwhile. However, if the internships are less meaningful or don’t offer much in terms of skill development, then it might not be as beneficial.”

Grace: “I’m interested in exploring internships with major tech firms in the field of AI. I want to further hone my skills and explore various career paths within that sector. Gaining experience in cutting-edge technologies and industry-leading companies will be crucial for my career growth.”
Wayne: “Looking back, I realize that focusing on more substantial internships during extended breaks or after graduation could have been beneficial. I’m now considering how to strategically plan my future internships to gain the most relevant experience.”
Jayati: “My plans include pursuing internships in financial institutions or research firms to work on economic analysis and financial markets. I want to build on the experiences I’ve had and continue to develop my expertise in these areas.”
Cliffton: “For my future, I’m aiming to pursue internships with larger tech companies to deepen my specialization. I believe that working with established firms will provide more substantial learning opportunities and help me gain a more comprehensive understanding of the industry.”
